Dominion Green Power Program Achieves Independent "Green-e Energy" Certification

San Francisco, CA (Vocus) September 3, 2009 -- 3Degrees announced today that its newest utility partner, Dominion Virginia Power (Dominion), has achieved Green-e® Energy (http://www.green-e.org/) certification for its voluntary Green Power program (http://www.dom.com/dominion-virginia-power/customer-service/energy-conservation/green-power.jsp). This certification is managed by Center for Resource Solutions, a national nonprofit organization. Green-e Energy is the leading independent consumer protection program for the sale of renewable energy in the country.

Dominion launched its Green Power program, in partnership with 3Degrees (http://www.3degreesinc.com), in Virginia on January 1, 2009, after many customers requested the opportunity to support renewable energy production. Through the program, residential, commercial, and industrial customers in Virginia can support renewable energy sources through the purchase of Renewable Energy Certificates (http://www.3degreesinc.com/products/recs/) (RECs). Already more than 3,200 Virginia households and businesses have enrolled in Green Power. 3Degrees helped Dominion develop the program and manages the renewable energy purchases on behalf of the utility.

Green Power enrollees pay an additional charge, 1.5 cents per kilowatt-hour, on their monthly bill to purchase RECs. This purchase gives the participant the right to claim the environmental benefits created by generating electricity from renewable sources, provides financial support to renewable energy projects, and guarantees that renewable energy is delivered to regional power pools. There are two pricing options – the “100% Option” and the “Block Option” – which allow enrolled customers to support renewable energy starting at as little as $2.00 a month

By applying and qualifying for Green-e Energy certification, Dominion ensures its customers that the Green Power program is a legitimate, trustworthy means of supporting renewable energy. As part of Green-e Energy certification, Dominion’s purchases of RECs for the Green Power program will be reviewed annually to ensure that Dominion purchased enough RECs to meet program demand and that those RECs were not “double sold” to other customers or used simultaneously to meet regulatory mandates. In addition, Green-e Energy will review all program marketing materials to ensure the program is represented accurately and fairly to customers.
